She's Leaving For London

Found a strand of hair on my pillowcase
A button lyin’ on the floor
Put it in a safe place just in case
An envelope in the snow
Outside my back door
Had a passport photo inside
Had a laugh and I almost cried
She’s leavin’ for London
I wonder why I wonder if she’s comin’ back
She’s not from here, she’s not from there
Just a dust speck in the air
One of the lost people in the world
She took her uniform
From a closet where it rested three days
Made her goodbye short and sweet
Ran to a taxi waiting in the rain
Now every plane that flies over head
Is like a perfume I can’t forget
Returning someday, like an umbrella left behind
She’s leavin’ for London
I wonder why I wonder if she’s comin’ back
She’s not from here, she’s not from there
Just a dust speck in the air
One of the lost people in the world
I’m driving to Seattle tonight
Me and the rain and the wipers and the headlights
A postcard dropped through the slot
Had some palm trees and a white sand beach
A deep blue sky ands a turquoise sea
And some words on the back written hastily
Said she’s down there for about a week
Just takin’ it easy
Had to fly out again on Friday
Post marked from an airport in Bangkok
She’s leavin’ for London
I wonder why I wonder if she’s comin’ back
She’s not from here, she’s not from there
Just a dust speck in the air
One of the lost people in the world
